Weather…
Friday, February 5, 2010

What I want to know is how this much rain can be going through Georgia once a week when one to two years ago, we were in a HUGE drought.
Weather Channel, please change the weather predictions so it is warm and sunny in northwestern Georgia.
Thank You.

Pottery and Photography in One
Thursday, January 21, 2010
My friend slash former pottery teacher sent me a link to this guy a few months back. Steve Irvine lives in Ontario, Canada and works a lot with photography and ceramics, but what got my attention were his beautiful pin hole cameras. Since we’re starting with pinhole photography in my light media class, I thought it might be fun to follow this step-by-step guide and try to make my own pinhole camera.

Now actually finding the time to do this will be difficult. Yesterday I was in the art studios almost, and quite literally, all day long. It’s fun though since I get to hang out with fun people, help and tutor students, and play with the materials when I’ve got the spare time. Basically, the best job any college student could ask for.

First Weekend
Saturday, January 16, 2010
I signed up for one of those tumblr accounts this morning. I’m not sure how long it will last – probably not long. I mean, I would rather write and post here instead of put in little blurbs and millions of photos up on that thing. But I figure, may as well give it a go, even if it is deleted in a week. There are just too many things the internet offers now-a-days that create an almost never-ending checklist of things to update.
Now that I’m back at school, it feels like Christmas break never actually happened. Bizarre. However, I am now student supervisor of the photography and ceramics departments in the art building, I’m taking athletic photographs at various points throughout the semester, I’m trying to throw stuff that I can sell this spring at the student sale, and I’m just generally running around trying to do fun things outside of class.
A preview for the semester, as of now:
College Health Topics: EASY EASY EASY! We had class the first day, but our actual teacher (the soccer coach) won’t be back ’till next Wednesday. So yesterday there was nothing, and Monday is MLK Day so no classes then. And the fact that it’s the first seven weeks makes things THAT much better.
Abnormal Psychology: I’m already fascinated by this class and we’ve just started the very beginning of intro stuff. People are weird and people’s brains are weird. I’m honestly excited to learn about all that weird stuff. And my professor looks like Barak Obama.
Light Media: I’ve been doing this stuff for, well, forever. But there are new techniques that I will be learning, new processes, and other fun stuff. Really, I’m excited to start working in the darkroom again while also taking a class.
Digital Imaging: Well, I’ll learn how to make legit digital things on a mac. Some projects seem cool, but like Light Media, I haven’t received a syllabus yet.
Early 20th Century Art: A required class, but I get to write my term paper and do my presentation work on architecture, design, and photography (mostly photography though). Oh – and basically if we’re all good students, we won’t have to take the final exam, just write the term paper. This is nice.
Oh – and Friday I get to have my intent to graduate interview thingy with the registrar. Um… what happened to my college life?

The Post Before School Starts
Monday, January 11, 2010
I’ve been reading a bunch of blogs today and a lot of people have posted about their just being back at school. Tomorrow I drive three hours (after two days of driving – see part one previous entry) back to my university in good ol’ Rome, Georgia. Oh goodie. Classes don’t start until Wednesday, but when they do start I’ll be all “OMG!” On my plate so far: early 20th century art history, Irish art seminar, digital imaging, light media, college health topics, abnormal psychology, 15-20-hour work weeks for the art department, photography for the athletic department, and the equestrian team. Let’s play a game and see how crazy I am by finals week in May.
Driving long distances will cease for at least a month after tomorrow – I think my car hates me for being driven SO much recently.
I realized that I haven’t initiated this blog with my travel map yet (GASP!). But there it is above… hopefully more countries will be blue in the future because that would be nice. I might go and see if there are some travel agencies in my town in NY who might want to hire someone – that’s probably the only office job I could do: spend other people’s money organizing trips. HA!

More Driving
Friday, January 8, 2010
I drove from New York to Virginia today… somehow, though I have never really done this before, I left during rush-hour and the roads hadn’t really been paved yet. It took me half an hour to get from my parents’ house to two towns over – that normally takes me ten to fifteen minutes. And driving through New York and Pennsylvania was relatively easy, but when I hit the rough spots, I really hit the rough spots. It sucks when you only have one out of two lanes available with snow and ice covering half the road (which is still not plowed). My neck still hurts from driving through some areas.
But once I hit Maryland everything got SO easy! Gone were the people who thought driving 20mph under the speed limit under perfectly fine conditions. And thank the gods for books on tape. I previously purchased The Chronicles of Narnia on CDs so I could have something to drive to and that passed the time so quickly! I haven’t read the books in so many years, so it was nice to hear them.
I highly recommend books on tape if you’re in need of a book but not in a position to actually read. It’s relaxing, keeps you focused, and quite entertaining.

Marvin and Molly
Thursday, January 7, 2010

I was out at the barn the other day and took some pictures of the two new weanlings, Marvin and Molly. It took them some coaxing to actually run around and be really cute as apposed to just cute, but we finally got the shot!

Welcome 2010 Survey
Saturday, January 2, 2010
Thanks to Jen for this survey.
1. What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?
2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I really don’t make resolutions – it’s not because I don’t want to better myself, but resolution and Lent type things don’t typically tend to last very long with me.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
HAHAHAHA no.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
People in my family have passed away, but I never knew them… weird.
5. What countries did you visit?
Italy, Sweden, and Scotland
6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Time. Heaps more time, in fact. This year went by so quickly. It’s weird to think that in five days I will have left for Florence a year ago.
7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
6 January, 2009 – it’s the day I flew from Rochester, New York to Florence, Italy and began an amazing semester-long adventure abroad.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Actually getting pottery and photography into shows and having people interested in my photographic services. Not only did I get hired to work for an equine related photography business, but I also got a lot of freelance jobs (for a college student) as well.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not giving my absolute all in my Italian ceramics class… and not being able to financially afford the shipping costs of over half my artwork I made in Florence.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Sprained ankle in Florence thank you to the happy skipping down my apartment stairwell… no real illness or injury to speak of though. I’m gracious to all of the horses that didn’t buck me off this year.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Hands down my Yashica-Mat 120mm camera and my black and white photo enlarger. Both have opened up my world to more photography.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I really don’t know… probably my supervisor for the semester, Claire. She kept things running like a well oiled machine in the art department and was probably the best supervisor I could ask for!
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The financial aid office at my school – a lot of easy paperwork didn’t get filed or filled out leading to all sorts of headaches with school. Luckily they were resolved… but students shouldn’t have to go through all that while keeping up with school and sports as well.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Food and train tickets in Italy. Food and gas money in the states. What can I say? I like to eat and travel!
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Just traveling… this seems to be what the whole entry is about, but I did a lot of it this year. Between flights around Europe/Scandinavia and road trips to Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, and New York… a lot of excitement was had.
16. What songs will always remind you of 2009?
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Get more rest… I look back and I definitely did a lot of running around this year, especially with my two jobs, athletic commitment, and academic commitment this past semester. I wish I took more time to really chill out once more a week or something to that effect.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Paper-writing. But that was required from my many-a-paper-writing classes.
20. What are you glad you did more of in 2009?
Relax… and not in the vacation, sun-bathing type of relaxing either. I truly think I was able to mentally mellow out just a little bit this year. Thank you, Italy.
21. How did you spend Christmas?
After a road trip through Missouri and Ohio, I stayed with my parents for Christmas.
22. Did you fall in love in 2009?
Nope
23. What was your favorite TV program?
Definite tie between True Blood and Doctor Who.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Nah… no one’s been that evil this past year.
25. What was the best book you read?
The Sookie Stackhouse series… though I’m still reading them.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Pandora.
27. What did you want and get?
28. What did you want and not get?
29. What was your favorite film of this year?
I bet it would’ve been The Men Who Stare at Goats if I had GOTTEN TO SEE IT!
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 20 and I really don’t remember what we did on my birthday. There was cake involved, though.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being able to stay at SACI for a full year rather than just a semester.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Jeans, nice tops, t-shirts, comfortable clothing. Very anti skinny jeans and 80s trends. There’s a reason why people say it shouldn’t come back.
33. What kept you sane?
Horses, photography, my jobs, and my friends.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Alexander Skarsgard or however you spell his name.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
I really can’t think of one off the top of my head.
36. Who did you miss?
SACI people and Meuto!
37. Who was the best new person you met?
Romeo – teacher of fine art photography – greatly inspired me in the realm of black and white film photography.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
It’s better to be blunt sometimes than to lighten the blow.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
“Wanted… dead or alive?” Nah… there is no one song that sums up my year and I’m too lazy to list the album of songs that would.
40. What will you be doing to ring in 2010?
I welcome the new year by getting involved in boxing and bowling competitions on a wii that my horse people own… basically awesome.
