Twenty Nine Inches

By far the tallest pot I have ever thrown in my entire life. Thanks to my good friend, Fire, patience, and a lot of clay, I measured this beast at 29 inches tall. Of course, it will shrink when it goes through the bisque and glaze kiln, but no matter. It’ll still be a good floor pot for my parents house when I drive up this Christmas.
I think I may make more of these – they add varying height in the kiln which is good for firing and it’s something new to work on and play with. What I will do with a whole collection of giant pots? I have absolutely no clue.

So… I was looking at my driving plans for the end of the semester and this is pretty much what it’s looking like. I’m heading up near St. Louis to see a very good friend of mine for a couple of days, then decided to take a stop in Bowling Green, Ohio just to break up the adventure between St. Louis and New York. I’m really excited to see a part of the country that I’ve never seen before, but I’ll also have three eight our drive sessions. Is it worth it? Oh hell yeah!

This week has been the first cold week that I have experienced since March when I was running around Europe. That picture above, yeah, we can’t do that anymore at our home soccer games because it’s too flippin’ cold out! I was photographing the soccer game between Berry and Faulkner yesterday at 1pm and was in jeans, fluffy socks, a sweater, a leather jacket, gloves with rabbit fur on the inside, and had a scarf I got in Italy wrapped around my face. Really, October, why did you have to bring this on?
But autumn comes with good things. I bought an issue on Bon Appetit at the grocery store and ingredients such as butter squash, turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, butter, bread pudding made me suddenly excited to be wrapped up in wool with giant socks covering my feet. I hate cold weather… I mean, Sweden was awesome and stuff, but it wasn’t bone-chillingly cold there… if I had any choice in the world, I would live on a beach where it was 90 degrees every day with sun. But the thought of root vegetables simmering in beef or chicken broth makes a lot of that angst towards cold weather diminish. Just a little.
So after all this talk of awesome autumnal cuisine, what am I to do? Well, I shall make some clay, do some homework, wrap up in a blanket, and make some food.

While on my fall break in Florida with my cousin, we decided to make one of the most ridiculous cakes ever. I ended up getting impatient which led to a portion of the frosting sagging down the side of the cake – but it was still awesome, so no matter. Really, the thing is HUGE… my cousin and I cut a piece off, split it, and could only eat half of each of our pieces.

  • Wake up early on a soon-to-be sunny morning and take photos of my campus with all the mist and colors with my Yashica Mat… this is not a good description of what I want to do exactly, but there will be examples later on.
  • Make roasted apples for dessert. It’s healthier and chocolate cake and has that autumn air… plus, who doesn’t love hot apples with a little bit of cinnamon, butter, and brown sugar?
  • Shepherd’s pie is a must before November.
  • Break in my leather jackets to the crisp northwest Georgia autumn air
  • Get through midterms with a relative amount of sanity. My professors decided to move things around on us so all of our tests are after fall break. I will get through it and I’ll do my best, but I might go a little crazy. This goal is to got become that crazy.
  • Ride well at the horse shows this fall… I’ve gotten better and I know that, but I need to show that I’ve gotten better.
  • And one more thing: I can not wait until things just slow down! I’ve been so busy every single day since I’ve come to Berry and this makes time pass way too quickly. So please time, slow down a little bit and let me have a few minutes to breathe.
